TECTRE: Passionate About Diversity

COURSE OVERVIEW

Exploring LGBTQ+ in the Workplace

Many organisations start their ED&I journey with Gender and Race/Ethnicity.  For many, these are the big winners when looking at inclusion and diversity.  However, we recognise that there are other protected characteristics (and beyond) which deserve to be included in the diversity repertoire.

The LGBTQ+ workshop assumes delegates have attended a course exploring bias previously and will build on their foundation of understanding of microbehaviours. It’s useful for delegates to recognise that these small everyday acts of interaction can support a culture where inclusion is not fully endorsed.  The workshop will help learners understand the sexual orientation vs gender identity conundrum and will (with significant exercises, discussion and group work) allow exploration of the key themes around LGBTQ+.

Learning objectives

At the end of the course the learner will be able to:

  • List the terms in the current LGBTQ+ landscape and be able to define them for others
  • Outline the issues faced within the LGBTQ+ community and the impacts on their working lives
  • Recognise the difference between gender identity, gender expression, biological sex, sexual orientation and attraction
  • Explore myths and some of the things that may not have known about LGBTQ+
  • Share the legal aspects and repercussions of discrimination in the workplace.
  • (Optional extra) Practice scenarios and their reactions
