TECTRE: Passionate About Diversity

COURSE OVERVIEW

Exploring Disability in the Workplace

Many organisations start their ED&I journey with Gender and Race/Ethnicity.  For many, these are the big winners when looking at inclusion and diversity.  However, we recognise that there are other protected characteristics (and beyond) which deserve to be included in the diversity repertoire.

The Exploring Disability workshop assumes delegates have attended a course exploring bias previously and will build on their foundation of understanding of microbehaviours. It’s useful for delegates to recognise that these small everyday acts of interaction can support a culture where inclusion is not fully endorsed. The workshop will help learners understand disabilities and hidden disabilities and their own reactions.  At the end of the course the aim is to ensure that delegates have broadened their perspectives on disability and inclusion.

Learning objectives

At the end of the course the learner will be able to:

  • Understand the prevalence of disability within the community and list current positive role models in history and in the present day
  • Outline the issues faced within the community and the impacts on their lives
  • Explore their own reactions to disability and understand the impact of their own reactions to others and explore new ways of communicating with people with disabilities
  • Consider the many different types of disability, key characteristics and the hidden nature of some disabilities
  • Identify ways in which we, our organisations, or the environment could be more supportive to people with disabilities through our actions, policies and insights
  • (Optional) Practice scenarios and reflect on their reactions
